Product Engineer


Reports to:      Product Engineering Manager  

FLSA Status:     Exempt; Professional Exemption


Position Summary:

This position will be specific product focused and its primary responsibility will be to evaluate existing and newly developed manufacturing processes, methods and materials to identify opportunities for improvement in first pass yield, cycle-time and any other efficiency gains.   In addition to the identification of opportunities, this position is responsible to determine cause and corrective action with quantifiable results.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Manufacturing Process


  • Evaluate existing and newly developed manufacturing processes relating to repeatability, yield, labor efficiency, material cost, safety and security.
  • Identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement by establishing cause and corrective action plans.
  • Ensure all product specific manufacturing processes are properly defined and documented.
  • With Manufacturing Director, modify and/or ensure work instructions are accurate for all processes and that all operators are properly trained in accordance with the approved procedures.
  • Periodically audit operations staffs to ensure the approved procedures are consistently followed. Document deviations and ensure they are formally communicated for corrective action, through use of our Non-Conformity process.


  • Quality Assurance
  • With Quality Assurance Manager, identify the raw material attributes that are critical to our manufacturing processes.


  • Ensure appropriate raw material specifications are defined and documented to ensure consistent quality and adequate process control of our products.
  • Ensure processes exist to validate key attributes of materials at in-coming.


Other Important Responsibilities:

  • Consistently demonstrate the ability to prioritize tasks to ensure most critical processes impacting business results are being addressed.
  • Thorough documentation of root cause analysis, corrective action and quantifiable results in the form of formal project reports.
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience;
  • BS or BA required;
  • Six Sigma Green Belt training preferred;
  • Ability to relate to employees and understand their needs;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to self-check own work;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Task oriented excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize work load;
  • Enthusiastic attitude, cooperative team player, adaptable to new or changing circumstances, professional demeanor, sensitive to client needs, self-motivated, creative and innovative;
  • Excellent problem solving skills; and
  • High level of computer literacy including working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and Outlook.




Physical qualifications and work environment:

  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs;
  • Must be able to sustain office work for 8+ hours per day including the following:
    • Sitting in an office chair
    • Typing
    • Reaching for the telephone
    • Standing at office equipment
    • Hearing for phone use
    • Sight for computer use
  • Must be able to sustain factory work as needed including the following:
    • Standing at machinery
    • Reaching and pulling to operate machinery
    • Sight for machinery operation
    • Walking through shop
  • Office environment is of moderate noise level.
  • Shop noise levels are such that protective ear-coverings are recommended.
