Product Engineering Technician


Reports To:       Product Engineering Manager.

FLSA Status:     Non-Exempt


Position Summary

The Product Engineering Technician (PET) assists engineers with research and development, quality control or production process development. In support of several Engineers, the engineering technician applies math, statistic, science and engineering principles to help improve processes and to solve problems using data. The PET must work well on a team, and utilize strong analytical and problem-solving skills. In addition, the PET executes and completes independent projects as assigned by the department Manager.  Finally, the PET inspects and tests equipment, analyzes test and product development plans, writes up weekly and project reports, and carries out any other necessary tasks delegated as needed.



  • Develops improved or more efficient methods for assembly, testing and measuring.
  • Conducts and documents time studies for improving production productivity and yield.
  • Solves routine technical problems.
  • Diagnoses equipment problems and recommends corrective action, both short and long term.
  • Create and document Production and Engineering processes.
  • Properly maintains time study files to ensure accuracy.
  • Performs measurements using standard and specialty equipment.
  • Develops special measurement techniques, measurement fixturing and test methods.
  • Assists in the development of layouts and floor plans.
  • Run, maintain and create programs for testing equipment.
  • Performs statistical studies using standard quality methods and procedures.
  • Writes reports and summarizes investigations and validations.
  • Prepares spreadsheets, charts and graphs for presentation of data.
  • Audits processes against established performance standards as required.


Other Important Responsibilities:

  • Must be flexible with work schedule to support off-shifts as required.
  • Supports timely Corrective Action response and resolution as required.
  • Engage and support companywide Safety and Cleanliness programs.
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • 1-3 years' experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Associate's degree required.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written with peers and management.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to self-check work.
  • CAD knowledge a plus.
  • Proficient in technical writing and ability to clearly express ideas and suggestions.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, task orientated, ability to prioritize.
  • Works well in a team environment.
  • A strong self-starter who demonstrates personal initiative to complete assignments on a timely basis.
  • Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
  • High level of computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)


Physical qualifications and work environment:

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.;
  • Must be able to sustain office work for 8+ hours per day including the following:
    • Sitting in a chair
    • Typing
    • Reaching for the telephone
    • Standing at office equipment
    • Hearing for phone use
    • Sight for computer use
    • Office environment is of moderate noise level.
  • Must be able to sustain factory work as needed including the following:
    • Standing at machinery.
    • Reaching and pulling to operate machinery.
    • Sight for machinery operation.
    • Walking through shop.
    • Shop noise levels is of moderate noise level.
