R&D Engineering Manager



Position Summary:


The R&D engineering manager plans, organizes and directs R&D engineering resources to meet company objectives for design, new product development and improvement of existing product lines by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates.


Essential Responsibilities:

    • Plans and formulates aspects of research and development plans such as project milestones, costs of project, and equipment and human resource requirements.
    • Directs daily activities of high performing R&D engineering team to ensure high productivity and project progress
    • Oversees key projects, processes and performance reports, data and analysis. Plans documentation system.
    • Develops, trains and supervises staff.
    • Will work with the R&D Director to develop, determine and implement policies, procedures and programs.
    • Selects correct design concepts and fundamental technology used for new products or improvement for existing ones.
    • Approves and submits proposals considered feasible to management for consideration and allocation of funds or allocates funds from the department budget.
    • Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring projects such as preparation of records of expenditures and research findings, progress reports, and staff conferences to inform management of current status of each project.
    • Working with the manufacturing, operations and quality manager, reviews and monitors quality and process improvements and new product development.
    • Directs the review of production costs and product quality, and modifies production and inventory control programs to maintain and enhance profitable operation of division.
    • Reviews operations and plans to meet requirements for sales planning and to ascertain engineering requirements to develop new markets.
    • Directs preparation of product development records for budgetary, production efficiency or other such purposes.
    • Recommends budgets to management, including staff use, technology, facility and equipment requirements or improvements.
  • Directs appropriate support for manufacturing and quality functions within the organization.



 Other Important Responsibilities:

  • Present ideas to the R&D Director in concept, then in further detail until completion.
  • Participate in weekly Project Update and Production meetings.
  • Timely Corrective Action response and resolution.
  • Internal Project Management.
  • Engage in activities to maximize profit margin.
  • Engage in activities to minimize setup and waste.
  • Engage and support companywide Safety and Cleanliness programs.
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Minimum 4-6 years of research and development experience;
  • Minimum of 2 years of commercializing new product experience;
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing environment required
  • Master's degree preferred;
  • Ability to research and understand technical topics;
  • Ability to visualize how a combination of known technology platforms will react to new technologies;
  • Preferred CAD experience;
  • Programming or electrical engineering a plus;
  • NFC/RFID development experience a plus;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to self-check own work;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Task oriented excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize work load;
  • Enthusiastic attitude, cooperative team player, adaptable to new or changing circumstances, professional demeanor, sensitive to client needs, self-motivated, creative and innovative;
  • Excellent problem solving skills; and
  • High level of computer literacy including working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and Outlook.



Physical qualifications and work environment:

  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs;
  • Must be able to sustain office work for 8+ hours per day including the following:
    • Sitting in an office chair
    • Typing
    • Reaching for the telephone
    • Standing at office equipment
    • Hearing for phone use
    • Sight for computer use
  • Must be able to sustain factory work as needed including the following:
    • Standing at machinery
    • Reaching and pulling to operate machinery
    • Sight for machinery operation
    • Walking through shop
  • Office environment is of moderate noise level.
  • Shop noise levels are such that protective ear-coverings are recommended.
  • Some projects may require an extra time commitment.
  • Some travel required.
